Dieses eingeführte Lehrbuch basiert auf Vorlesungen, die der Autor mehr als 25 Jahre lang an der Westfälischen Wilhelms- Universität Münster gehalten hat. Der Schwerpunkt des Buches liegt bei der geometrischen Kristallographie. Vom Raumgitter aus werden Symmetrieoperationen, Bravais-Gitter, Raum- und Punktgruppen abgehandelt. Die Grundzüge der Gruppentheorie sind erläutert und in dieser 6. Auflage erweitert worden. Es folgen Kapitel über Kristallchemie und röntgenographische Untersuchungen. Die einzelnen Kapitel schließen mit zahlreichen Übungsaufgaben, deren Lösungen angegeben sind.
In diesem Lehrbuch werden in anschaulicher Form die kristallographischen Grundlagen und die einzelnen praktischen Schritte einer modernen Kristallstrukturbestimmung vermittelt. Bei der Darstellung der theoretischen Aspekte wird dabei mehr Wert auf Verständlichkeit gelegt als auf rigorose mathematische Formulierung, dies wird durch zahlreiche Abbildungen unterstützt.
