Insights into a Nontoxic and High-Yielding Synthesis of Methyltrioxorhenium (MTO)

The versatile catalyst methyltrioxorhenium(VII) (MTO) is now available in high yields by utilizing easily accessible nontoxic starting materials. The new synthetic pathway allows an inexpensive, large-scale production of MTO, paving the way for industrial applications. A variety of starting materials is compared with respect to their applicability, availability and ease of handling. The reaction times and the byproducts formed are compared under different reaction conditions. It was seen that silver perrhenate in combination with methylzinc acetate, which was derived from trimethylaluminum and zinc acetate, are the best starting materials for a high-yielding large-scale synthesis of MTO. Reactions of Halogens/Interhalogens with Polypyridyl Substrates: The Case of 2,4,6-Tris(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine

The reactions between 2,4,6-tris(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (tptz) and halogens (Br2, I2) or interhalogens (ICl, IBr) yielded different products isolated in the solid state. (Htptz+)(Br3-), (Htptz+)(IBr2-), (H3tptz3+)(I3Br4-)(IBr2-)2, and (H3tptz3+)(ICl2-)3, obtained from the reactions between tptz and Br2, IBr, and ICl, were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and FT-Raman spectroscopy. All compounds are salts containing the protonated donor counterbalanced by polyhalide anions of various complexity. In particular, in (H3tptz3+)(I3Br4-)(IBr2-)2 the first example of a planar I3Br4- moiety can be observed. In the case of the reaction between tptz and I2, the elemental analysis of the product indicates a 1:1 molar ratio between tptz and I2, but the FT-Raman spectrum is not consistent with the formation of a simple adduct, clearly indicating the simultaneous presence of diiodine and symmetric triiodide. Lanthanide Complexes of 2,2[prime],2[Prime]-(10-{[Hydroxy(phenyl)phosphoryl]methyl}-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecan-1,4,7-triyl)triacetic Acid: Structural Characterisation of Intermediates from the Proposed Complexation Mechanism in the Systems of LnIII-dota-Type Ligands

The crystal and molecular structures of ten lanthanide complexes of H4do3aPPh [2,2[prime],2[Prime]-(10-{[hydroxy(phenyl)phosphoryl]methyl}-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecan-1,4,7-triyl)triacetic acid] are presented here. These complexes constitute a new type of coordination compounds within the Ln-dota family. They represent an intermediate stage on the way from the ligand to the classical in-cavity complexes. The important role of intramolecular H-bonds for the process was observed. These intermediate complexes in the solid state form several isostructural groups with the different coordination polyhedra (square antiprisma or dodecahedron) of lanthanide ions. Deaggregation of Trimethylsilylmethyllithium

Polyamine donor bases such as N,N,N[prime],N[prime]-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA), (-)-sparteine and N,N,N[prime],N[Prime],N[Prime]-pentamethyldiethylentriamine (PMDETA) have been employed to deaggregate parent trimethylsilylmethyllithium (1). The crystal structures of the dimers [(TMEDA)·LiCH2SiMe3]2 (2) and [{(-)-sparteine}·LiCH2SiMe3]2 (3) were determined and reveal a four-membered ring as the central structural motif. The two lithium atoms are each coordinated by the chelating ligands and the carbanions. The Li-C contacts show alternating bond lengths. The monomer [(PMDETA)·LiCH2SiMe3] (4) has the shortest Li-C contact of the aggregates discussed, and the Me3Si group points toward the central nitrogen atom of the PMDETA ligand, even if this alignment seems unfavourable for steric reasons. The bond lengths and angles of compounds 2-4 are discussed in relation to the orientation of the lone pair at the carbanion. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008)

Hydrogen Bonding and Anion Binding in Structures of Tris(pyrazolyl)boratenickel(II) and Phosphate Esters

This paper presents the syntheses, crystal structures and spectroscopic properties of a series of nickel(II) complexes containing hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate and phosphate esters: [Tp*Ni(Hpz*)2(L)][(RO)2PO2] [R = Et, Bu; L = H2O (1), (BuO)2P(O)OH (2)] and [Tp*Ni(Hpz*)(H2O)2][(EtO)2PO2] (5) {Tp* = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate, Hpz* = 3,5-dimethylpyrazole}. The complexes [Ni(Tp*)2] (3) and [(Tp*Ni)2([mu]-pz*)([mu]-OH)](4) were also prepared and fully characterized. X-ray crystallographic studies of 1 and 2 reveal that the pyrazole moieties are hydrogen bonded to the guest phosphate ester anion. In complex 5, the phosphate anion is hydrogen-bonded by two O-H groups of the water molecules. Their behavior in solution was investigated by 1D and 2D 1H NMR spectroscopic techniques. Crystal Structures and Magnetic Properties of 2D Supramolecular Architectures Assembled from Benzimidazolecarboxylato-Bridged 1D Double-Stranded Coordinating Chains Featuring Metallomacrocycles as Subunits

Two new 2D supramolecular architectures [{Mn2(L1)2(H2O)2}·2CH3OH]n (1) and [{Mn2(L2)2(CH3OH)4}·2CH3OH·4(H2O)]n (2) were assembled from the newly synthesised semi-rigid ligands H2L1 {2,6-bis[(6-carboxy-2,4-dimethylbenzimidazol-1-yl)methyl]pyridine} and H2L2 {2,6-bis[(6-carboxy-4-methyl-2-propylbenzimidazol-1-yl)methyl]pyridine} by reaction with MnII ions. They both contain novel 1D double-stranded coordinating chains with metallomacrocyclic subunits and dinuclear MnII subrings bridged by benzimidazolecarboxylato ions, the latter derived from the ligands. The differences in the steric hindrance of the methyl and propyl groups attached to the benzimidazole rings in H2L1 and H2L2 led to different coordinating modes of the carboxylato groups and, thus, aesthetically fascinating extended structures with useful magnetic properties. Variable-temperature susceptibility measurements (2-300 K) revealed antiferromagnetic coupling interactions (J = -0.23 cm-1 for 1 and -0.92 cm-1 for 2) with values being within the reported range but differing from each other due to the distinct bridging modes of the carboxylato ions. The different crystal structures and magnetic properties of 1 and 2 are discussed in detail.(© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008)

Heterometallic CoIII-LnIII (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy) Complexes on a p-Sulfonatothiacalix[4]arene Platform Exhibiting Redox-Switchable Metal-to-Metal Energy Transfer

Nuclear magnetic relaxation along with pH metric data have been used to reveal pH-dependent heterometallic CoIII-LnIII (Ln = Gd, Tb, and Dy) complex formation on a p-sulfonatothiacalix[4]arene (TCAS) platform in aqueous solution. The previously obtained 1D and 2D 1H NMR spectroscopic and X-ray data prove the outer sphere binding of the CoIII block with the upper rim of TCAS, whereas the LnIII ion is coordinated with the phenolate groups of the lower rim of TCAS. The inclusive outer-sphere binding of CoIII tris(dipyridyl) and tris(ethylendiaminate) complexes with the upper rim of TCAS favors binding of the inner-sphere lanthanide ions through the lower rim of TCAS, whereas noninclusive binding of CoIII bis(histidinate) provides no effect on the binding of lanthanide ions. The emission properties of [Co(dipy)3]3+-LnIII (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy) complexes indicate the quenching of 4f luminescence by the 3d block. This quenching can be switched off by electrochemical CoIII/CoII reduction with further switching on by reoxidation. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008)

Synthesis of Single-Crystal Gold Nano- and Microprisms Using a Solvent-Reductant-Template Ionic Liquid

A single-step procedure to obtain variable-sized nano- and microprisms of gold in ionic liquids is presented. Using an ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (bmimPF6), as a solvent for the Au precursor as well as the reducing reagent for the reaction, one can control the size of the produced gold nanostructures. By varying the reaction time, prismatic particles with a very broad size range of 3-20 [mu]m in diameter and 10-400 nm in thickness were obtained. Using an alternative ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonimide) (bmimTf2N), uniform, single-crystal nano- and microprisms with an even larger size of about 100 [mu]m in diameter were prepared. Large gold prisms of this type could be useful as a support for adsorbed species, as functional thin films, or as a conducting support for molecular electronics.(© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. An Overview of Palladium Nanocatalysts: Surface and Molecular Reactivity

The use of metallic nanoparticles in catalysis under homogeneous conditions leads to a discussion of their catalytic nature: whether the catalyst behaves as a molecular species or, on the contrary, the metallic surface is directly involved in the reactivity. This dilemma is intrinsically associated to the kinetic stability of the nanoclusters, favouring their agglomeration, and also to the formation of molecular species by reaction of the atoms placed at low-coordination positions at the metallic surface. In particular, for palladium-catalyzed processes, a large number of contributions have been reported in the last decade involving nanoparticles, but few of them analyze the mechanistic aspects. The present review aims to collect the more relevant research carried out in catalysis involving palladium nanoparticles in the liquid phase and addressing the nature of the catalytically active species. This kind of work is mainly focused on hydrogenation and C-C coupling processes.(© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008)

Pseudo-Octahedral Schiff Base Nickel(II) Complexes: Does Single Oxidation Always Lead to the Nickel(III) Valence Tautomer?

With the aim of establishing correlations between the ligand structure and the oxidation site in nickel complexes from Schiff base ligands, five ligands and their nickel complexes have been synthesized. The prototypical asymmetric Schiff base ligand HL1 contains both phenol and pyridine pendant arms with a pivotal imine nitrogen atom. Ligands HL2-5 differ from HL1 by either their phenolate para substituent, the hybridization of the pivotal nitrogen atom, and/or the N-donor properties of the pyridine moiety. The five complexes [Ni(L1-5)2] are obtained by treating the corresponding ligands with 0.5 equiv. of Ni(OAc)2·4H2O in the presence of NEt3. X-ray crystal-structure diffraction studies as well as DFT calculations reveal that [Ni(L1-5)2] involves a high-spin nickel(II) ion within a pseudo-octahedral geometry. The two ligands are arranged in a meridional fashion when the pivotal nitrogen atom is an imine {as in [Ni(L1-2)2] and [Ni(L4-5)2]}, while the fac isomer is preferred in [Ni(L3)2] (amino pivotal nitrogen atom). [Ni(L1)2] is characterized by an oxidation potential at -0.17 V vs. Fc+/Fc. The one-
