Copper Zeolites as Green Catalysts for Multicomponent Reactions of Aldehydes, Terminal Alkynes and Amines: An Efficient and Green Synthesis of Propargylamines

CuI-modified zeolites, especially CuI-USY, have proved to be very efficient catalysts in multicomponent reactions, allowing for a solvent-free synthesis of propargylamines from aldehydes, amines, and terminal alkynes. With a heterogeneous catalyst and in the absence of solvent, this process is among the greenest ever reported. A mechanism has been proposed for this three-component reaction.(© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008)

Aryl Trialkylsilyl Ketenes: Acid-Catalyzed Synthesis from 1-Aryl-2-diazo-2-trialkylsilylethanones and Their Conversion into 3-Silyl-1-silyloxyallenes

Aryl-substituted [alpha]-silyl [alpha]-diazo ketones are readily transformed into aryl silyl ketenes in the presence of a catalytic amount of triflic acid. Thus, a convenient method to prepare these silyl ketenes becomes available, which combines two steps, silylation of an aryl diazomethyl ketone and acid-induced Wolff rearrangement of the formed [alpha]-silyl [alpha]-diazo ketone, in a one-pot procedure. It appears that the trialkylammonium salt, which is formed in the silylation step, can also catalyze the Wolff rearrangement, but distinctly more slowly than the proton acid. The silyl ketenes react smoothly with [alpha]-silyl [alpha]-diazo ketones to form 3-silyl-1-silyloxyallenes in fairly good yields. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008)

Vanadium(V) Salen Complex Catalyzed Highly Enantioselective Cyanoformylation of Aldehydes in the Presence of Imidazole as a Cocatalyst

Highly enantioselective cyanoformylation of aldehydes catalyzed by VV chiral salen complex by using ethyl cyanoformate as a source of cyanide was accomplished in the presence of several cocatalysts. Excellent yields and ee values for the resulting cyanohydrin carbonates were achieved when imidazole was used as a cocatalyst at -20 °C. The ee value of the cyanohydrin carbonate of 2-naphthaldehyde was further improved to >99 % by recrystallization. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008)

Reactivity of (Mono-tert-butyloxiranyl)lithium: A Theoretical Ab Initio Study

The reactivity of the lithiated tert-butyloxiranyl anion has been studied by means of ab initio calculations at the CCSD(T)//MP2 level of theory. Four reaction paths have been studied (three ring-opening reactions and one addition reaction). All extrema were located and characterised. The effects of solvation by one or two MeLi molecules were studied for each reaction path by reoptimising the various extrema. It was found that the addition reaction path becomes competitive when at least two MeLi molecules are taken into account. This shows the catalytic effect of alkyllithium on this reaction path. In no case could a free carbene be characterised as a reaction intermediate. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008)

Solution-Phase Synthesis of First-Generation Tetraester Dendritic Branches Involving Microwave and/or Ultrasonic Irradiation

Trifunctionalized aromatic cores were selectively protected to obtain precursors for bidirectional dendritic unit growth through stepwise divergent syntheses. The synthesis of first-generation dendrimer building blocks was performed by nucleophilic substitution of bromomethyl-substituted aromatic cores with diethyl malonate anions in the presence of carbonate in halogen-free solvents. The screening of the reaction parameters revealed the optimum conditions for small- and larger-scale synthesis: these require microwave or ultrasonic irradiation to achieve yields around 70 % in reaction times as short as 15 min. As a result of the heterogeneity of the reaction mixtures, efficient stirring was important to suppress byproduct formation.(© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008)

Organocatalytic Three-Component Reactions of Pyruvate, Aldehyde and Aniline by Hydrogen-Bonding Catalysts

Hydrogen-bonding catalysts have been found to catalyze one-pot three-component reactions of pyruvate, anilines and aldehydes to afford versatile 3-amino-1,5-dihydro-2H-pyrrol-2-ones in high yields. Both, thioureas and phosphoric acids are viable catalysts for these reactions and have comparable activity. The corresponding chiral thioureas and phosphoric acids have also been used in these three-component reactions to give pyrrol-2-ones in high yields and with moderate enantioselectivities.(© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Unusual Reactions Between Aromatic Carbon Supernucleophiles and 1,2-Diazabuta-1,3-dienes: Useful Routes to New Pyrazolone and Cinnoline Derivatives

Reactions between 1,3,5-tris(dialkylamino)benzenes and 1,2-diazabuta-1,3-dienes produce semicarbazone derivatives through attack of the supernucleophile aromatic carbon atom at the terminal carbon atom of the heterodiene reagent. The strong activation of the aromatic ring due to the presence of the three amino groups in a symmetrical relationship promotes electrophilic aromatic substitution by the neutral carbon atom of the electrophile. The resulting semicarbazones, in methanol in the presence of sodium methoxide, mainly afford pyrazolone derivatives, whereas in THF in the presence of sodium methoxide an unusual cyclization reaction produces cinnoline derivatives as the major products. Both cyclization reaction mechanisms are discussed.(© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008)

Phosphotungstic Acid Catalyzed Amidation of Alcohols

Mild nucleophilic substitution reactions of benzhydrylic, benzylic, allylic, and simple aliphatic alcohols with sulfonamides, benzamide, and 4-nitroaniline in the presence of 12-phosphotungstic acid as an efficient, eco-friendly, cheap, and air- and moisture-tolerant catalyst for the construction of C-N bonds has been investigated. The amine derivatives were obtained in good yields (up to 98 %). The reusable nature of the 12-phosphotungstic acid makes this protocol more attractive.(© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008)
